Cow brains and canals

Amber blogs:

August 11

Hello everybody!

After Dad and I had our share of Malos Aires, we hopped on a train to a quaint delta town called Tigre. Tigre is unlike anywhere I´d ever been. Instead of roads, people rely on the dozens of canals for transportation. Most people have a little boat, so to go to a restauraunt you hop in your boat! There´s a huge rowing culture there. There´s also a big taxi-boat that dad and I used to get into town and back to the hostel, so we got a pretty good tour of the area and the houses.

The tide is affected by the moon and the wind, so all the houses are on stilts for protection and each property has a little dock. Many people who live in B.A. have weekend getaways here.

The best part about Tigre was the beautiful hostel we were staying at and the nice people there. Delta Hostel is on a little island surrounded by canals, and we had the peaceful island mostly to ourselves! We canoed and enjoyed the tranquility. Guillerno, the young caretaker, and I became friends - he loves pop art and photography, and we have similar taste in music. (I was suprised to hear him play the Juno soundtrack! Cat Powers, too)

Oh!!! And guess what we ate? On saturday, we went to a restaraunt and tried the local specialty called ¨parillo¨- they bring you a little barbecue packedwith all sorts of strange meats. We tried it all, including morcilla (blood sausage) riƱon (kidney) and tripa gorda (fat intestines.) Some strange tasting meat...

But the best food we had so far (in my opinion) was when we were invited by our new friends to an asado barbeque, a Sunday tradition for families. There we tasted some... drumroll please.... COW BRAIN!!! Don´t worry, it wasn´t human brain. It´s called ¨sesos,¨and the texture is a bit like tofu. We weren´t too crazy about it, but the ribs and sausage at the bbq were among the best I´ve ever had.

After two days in Tigre, we came back to B.A. by train. Halfway there something inside the train exploded and we had to get off and wait for the next one. But we caught our 7.00 bus just fine, and we arrived in Mendoza this morning.

And here we are in at Damajuana Hostel in the city, free internet (woohoo!) and just walked to the huge park a few blocks away. Tomorrow we´ll take a bus to the cute mountain town of Uspallata, which is pretty close to Aconcagua, the tallest mountain in the Americas. Dad says, ¨They filmed 7 Years in Tibet there.¨

Much love! Leave us a comment!

Amber!
It sounds like you're having the time of your life. I hear the tortas are really good in Argentina, you might like them more than cow brain.

Hope you're doing well, can't wait for your next post.

From taipei,
Tessa
